Top Baits - Bass Fishing

There is a good bite on main lake and secondary points right now. Target 10’-20’ of water with a Pee Wee Football Jig. If there is some sort of wood structure on the point the fish are holding to it.

There is also a SPRO RkCrawler bite starting. Target channel swing banks that have ledge rock mixed with gravel. These fish seem to be setting up in 10’-15’ of water.

With the cooling water temps there has been some schooling activity in the backs of some of the creeks. This bite does not last long. You will want to be on the lake at first light. Target the creeks that have got schools of bait and timber in them. A Bone colored spook and an underspin with a 3.3” Keitech are the best baits to catch these fish.

Top Baits - Crappie Fishing

Live Crappie Minnows or soft plastic Swimming Minnows in color Monkey Milk or Electric Chicken. Target standing timber and trees under docks. Crappie are in roughly 15ft-25ft of water.

With the cooling water temps, the fish are starting to move. There has been a strong underspin bite on main lake points. Target 10’-20’ of water with a 3/8oz or 1/2oz underspin with a 3.3 Keitech swimbait.

There is still a strong dock bite. Right now you will want to cover the walk ways of the docks with a 3/8oz finesse jig. You can’t fish this bait shallow enough, don’t be afraid to present the bait in inches of water. Then fish the deep end of the dock with a jigging spoon or flutter spoon. These fish will be suspended in 10’-20’ of water under the docks.

If you’re looking for a better quality bite, pick up a glide bait and cover as much water as possible. There does seem to be a more consistent bite around main lake and secondary points that have some sort of wood cover (timber or brush).

Top Baits - Crappie Fishing

The boat dock bite continues to get stronger. Target community docks that sit over deep water. The fish will be suspended under the dock in 15’-25’ of water. A flutter spoon and jigging spoon is the best approach to target these fish.

The drop shot is also still very consistent. Target main lake points that have either a brush pile or standing timber on them. Target the brush piles that are in 20’-30’ of water or timber where the tree tops out at 20’-30’. The best colors have been plum or brown purple laminate.

The glide bait bite is also getting stronger. Target main lake pockets where bluegill are spawning. This bite is even better when there is wind or an overcast day. The majority of the bites will come in 5’-10’ of water.

There is still a decent dock bite around the lake. Target bigger community docks with deep water under them. The fish seem to be suspending in 20’-30’ of water around the cables of the dock. Target these docks with a spoon

There is a shallow bite starting up in the river arms. Target laydowns and rock transitions with your favorite moving bait. A squarebill and glide bait have been working well to get a bigger bite.

The dock bite continues to be consistent. Target main lake community docks that are sitting over deep water. The fish are suspended on the cables and cross bars. A jigging spoon or flutter spoon are the best baits for targeting these fish. The majority of the bites have been coming in 10’-20’ of water.

The shallow bite is picking up. You will want to be out at first light to experience the best shallow bite. A glide bait and whopper plopper have been working the best. Cover as much water as possible and figure out what type of bank the fish are relating to each day.

The strongest pattern on the lake continues to be the main lake gravel points in 20’-30’ of water. The drop shot with a 4” finesse worm in plum and a 5/8oz white jigging spoon have been the best baits to target these fish.

The deep timber bite is starting to get better now that generation through the dam has slowed. Target main lake bluff end points with deep timer that is in 60’-80’ of water but the top of the tree is in 20’-30’. A jigging spoon and flutter spoon have been working the best to get these fish to bite.

There is still a decent brush pile bite in the river arms. You won’t get very many bite but when you do it seems to be a better quality bite. Target brush in 15’-25’ of water with a 10” ribbon tail worm.

With water generation slowing, the off shore bite has gotten a little tough, but continues to be a strong pattern. Target main lake gravel roll-off points in 20’-30’ of water. A jigging spoon has started working well to catch a few fish quickly. Once the school gets smart to the spoon, a drop shot works the best.

Because of the slowed generation there are more fish starting to suspend. Target bluff end points that have got timber on them. Your boat will be in 50’-100’ of water but you want the tops of the trees to be in 20’-30’ of water. White jigging spoons, big flutter spoons and a drop shot are the best techniques for targeting these fish.

Even with the falling water the shallow topwater bite continues to stay strong. With this pattern you have to keep an open mind. One day the best bite will be on main lake transitions, the next it will be in the back of a creek. The one consistent factor is making sure your bait is as close to the shoreline as possible throughout the retrieve. The best baits have been a loon colored whopper plopper or a black buzzbait.

Deep community boat docks in channel swing banks are also holding a lot of fish. This is more of a morning bite. Target docks that are 70’ and deeper. The fish will be suspended under them in 15’-30’ of water. A jigging spoon or River2Sea WorldWide Spoon in White have been the best baits for targeting these fish.

In the river arms there is a ton of fish on the offshore structure. Target 15’-25’ of water with a variety of different baits. Flutter spoons, deep diving crankbaits, football jigs, and swimbaits have been working very well. You have to cycle through baits each day to figure out what the fish want.

With the lake on the rise there should be some fish moving up with the water. Flipping should be a way to get some good bites. Brush hogs and beaver style baits with a 1/4oz-1/2oz weight are a go-to when flipping heavy cover. When the Corp is pulling water there are fish that move out to the edge of the bushes. A spinner bait has been the best technique to catch these fish. A 3/8oz or 1/2oz in White or White with chartreuse have been the best colors. Before the lake came up there has been a good football jig bite. This pattern should still be strong when the Corp pulls water. Target 20’-30’ of water. The Pee Wee Football jig gets the most bites. The best colors have been PB&J or Hail Mary.

The Shad Spawn is in full swing right now. With that, the best bite is first thing in the morning. Target shallow main lake and secondary points that have some sort of hard structure on them such as standing timber, bushes, and boat docks. The best bait for targeting these fish has been a spinnerbait. For colors any sort of white or White and Chartreuse has been the best.

There is also a bream spawn that has started. You can find this happening in ledge rock banks with gravel mixed. Target 4’-8’ of water with a variety of soft plastics such as a brush hog or a green pumpkin chatterbait.

The glide bait bite has been really hot. Target main lake transition banks that have ledge rock and gravel mixed. The fish are sitting in 4’-8’ of water. Wind can be a big factor in how well this technique works. The more wind the better.

Top Baits - Bass FishingWith the Full Moon, the shad spawn has started. You’ll want to be out before first light. As soon as the sun comes up this bite ends quickly. Target shallow gravel points or boat docks where you will see big schools of shad at the surface. Spinnerbaits, Topwater, and Glide Baits have been the best techniques for targeting these fish. The bite slows down a lot after the sun comes up. Stay in the same areas where you find the shad spawn in the mornings and pick up a Carolina Rig with a 3/8oz-3/4oz weight and your favorite senko style bait. The colors Green Pumpkin, and Watermelon Red haven been working the best. The fish have been setting up on main lake points in 15-25ft of water. The lake has come down to summer pool so there is not a ton of cover left in the water. What is left has been holding fish. Glide Baits have been working the best to draw these fish out of the cover. Overcast and windy conditions help this bite tremendously. With there being stained water in a good majority of the lake, Bone and Mossback have been the best colors.

The smallmouth bite continues to be the strongest and most consistent bite. The key is finding the cleaner water from State Park to point 5. Tubes and Ned Rigs in Green Pumpkin with orange are the best techniques for targeting Smallmouth. Target main lake gravel points in 10’-20’ of water. This bite should continue to stay strong with the amount of water the Corp is running through the lake.

There is a good shallow flipping bite in the mid to upper James and from the Shell Knob Bridge to the Upper Kings River. You have to fish around each day trying to find where the fish are located. Some days they are on main lake and secondary points the next they are in the very back of the creeks. The best baits have been the Netbait Magnum Finesse Worm in Green Pumpkin and the Missile Baits D Bomb in Green Pumpkin as well.

There is the beginning of a shad spawn. Target main lake and secondary points. The best baits to target these fish is with a Topwater Spook in bone color or a wake bait like the Strike King Wake Shad in a Sexy Shad Pattern. These fish will be from the edge of the bushes out to about 10’ of water.
